Rats need a roomy cage for growth and general well being. An indoor guinea pig/rabbit cage is appropriate. It is not advisable to use sawdust, as a percentage of Rats have an allergy with it. Paper based bedding and floor coverings are avalible and recommended. It is also a good idea to have a house inside the cage, for comfort and a place of privacy for your Rat. Again, guinea pig houses are suitable. Before buying your Rat a few simple checks can help you tell if its healthy and happy. Are its eye nice and bright? Good condition of its fur? Does it seem happy and sociable? If in doubt always contact your vet.
