Rats are very hygienic creatures, they do not need bathing. It is wise to check the tail once in a while, as somtimes the Rat can miss a patch when cleaning itself. Damp cotton wool does the job just fine. Rats teeth have yellow enamel, it is nothing to do with poor hygiene and nothing to worry about. Dry based foods should help with teeth hygiene, there is no need to clean them yourself. Their teeth can grow very long, it is advisable to have a gnawing stone or block in their cage for them. If in doubt always contact your vet.
